Limoux: Birthplace of the World's First Sparkling Wine
Nestled in the Aude valley of southern France, Limoux claims to have created sparkling wine in 1531, over a century before Champagne. This historic region produces around 15 million bottles annually, with a focus on elegant sparkling wines and distinctive still whites across 1,500 hectares.
Famous for Blanquette de Limoux and Crémant de Limoux, crafted from Mauzac, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc. The region also produces Limoux AOC still whites with remarkable freshness and complexity. About 90% of production is dedicated to sparkling wines.
Atlantic and Mediterranean influences converge in this elevated region, with vineyards planted between 200-400 meters. Limestone and clay soils, combined with cool nights and sunny days, create ideal conditions for high-acidity grapes that develop elegance and finesse.
